Nikolas Kerl

Zurich, Switzerland

Nikolas Kerl

“I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.”
Oscar Wilde

Zurich, Switzerland, 2012-04-16 - I founded my product line, Nikolas Kerl, fully aware of the difficulties a young designer and manufacturer faces in establishing himself in the highly contested market of the furniture industry. Beyond this fact, I am so convinced by my idea that all doubts regarding the success of the project, or the worth of a product when faced with critical clients, pale in comparison.

Furniture and objects by Nikolas Kerl are designed to make an exceptional and simple statement through the choice of their material, the craft visible in their workmanship, and the confident expression of their form.

The original idea developed over the past several years into a concrete responsibility, and an approach defined by passion, affection, and enthusiasm. Traditional craftsmanship and exclusive materials, as well as a haptic visual experience, provide my objects with traits that convince the most critical of clients.

On this note, I am proud to present you furniture and design objects that are produced exclusively in Switzerland and in collaboration with local craftsmen and companies in manufacturer quality. I hope that I can thus convince you of the validity of my ideas and I thank you for your trust.

Tortoise

Official name of the product: Tortoise
Material: Clay
Treatment: Japanese Raku
Colour: Black
Size:16.6 x 28.5 cm
Designer or design team: Nikolas Kerl
Launch date: 2011
Usage: Indirect Mood Light
Photographer: Björn Allemann

Hand-crafted mood lighting object.
Burned clay.

Following the Japanese process of Raku, this clay object is buried in sawdust concluding the second round of firing. The wood shavings thus burn in a vacuum, wherein carbon particles bind with the surface of the clay and lend it a dark, metallic sheen. The simplistic, shell-like form of the lighting object emphasizes the mysterious, fascinating character of the object resulting from this process. A cursory glance is not sufficient to recognize the material.

Stan & Harvey, 2011

Official name of the product: Stan & Harvey
Material: Crystal glass
Treatment: Handblown
Colour: olive, lilac, teal, ashgrey
Size: 15x15.5 cm Stan / 17x19.5cm Harvey
Designer or design team: Nikolas Kerl
Launch date: 2011
Usage: Vase / Glassobject
Photographer: Björn Allemann

Hand-blown vases.
Crystal glass.

Both of these glass objects, just like their older brother Straight A, are hand-blown using with a pear wood mold. The liveliness of the manufacturing process is reflected in these concepts by Nikolas Kerl. The siblings Stan & Harvey react to touch with a slight swaying motion and thus convey the playful nature of their design. The exceptional ability of the glass blower makes both of these objects one of a kind. Both models are available with olive, lilac, and teal finishes.

T1

Official name of the product: T1
Material: Chestnut and thermo-treated beech
Treatment: hard wax and oil
Size: 90 x 220 cm
Designer or design team: Nikolas Kerl
Launch date: 2010
Usage: Working and Dining Table
Photographer: Björn Allemann

Hand-crafted solid wood table.
Chestnut and thermo-treated beech. Treated with hard wax and oil.

For the design of this dining and working table, Nikolas Kerl was guided by the dialog between two types of wood. Light, strikingly grained chestnut is carried by darker, nearly black beech. The beech wood acquires its remarkable tone through a unique thermal process, which darkens the wood fibers from the core outwards. A clamp joint in Biedermeier style suspends the table plate on its frame. This allows the wood room to breathe without restrictions. The massive nature of the table is defined by its legs, slightly angled to the outside, which seamlessly mesh the table with a room.

Straight A

Official name of the product: Straight A
Material: Clear Glass
Treatment: Hand Blown
Colour: Clear
Size: 34.5 x 35 cm
Details:
Designer or design team: Nikolas Kerl
Launch date: 2010
Usage: Vase
Photographer: Björn Allemann

Hand-blown vase.
Clear glass.

In scorching heat, quartz sand becomes a stiff liquid and, according to the skill of the glass blower, a fragile glass. The liveliness of this material guided Nikolas Kerl to the design of this vase. When touched, the glass object reacts with a slight swaying because of its rounded bottom. It comes to rest in its static equilibrium position. According to its contents, the vessel leans in another direction. Suitable as a container for large flower arrangements as well as special interior arrangements.

Slate Table Copper, Special Edition

Official name of the product: Slate Table Copper, Special Edition
Material: Flat-rolled steel, copper-plated. Black slate slab, rough finish
Treatment: Color-enhanced as well as surface-sealed
Colour: Copper
Options: Chrome
Size: 33 x 90 cm
Designer or design team: Nikolas Kerl
Launch date: 2010
Usage: Coffee Table
Photographer: Björn Allemann

Coffee table.
Flat-rolled steel, copper-plated. Black slate slab, rough finish.

A design that lives from the contrasting characteristics of two materials. The frame of the coffee table is manufactured from a single piece of flat steel, which is laser-cut into a cruciform shape, bent, and copper-plated with a high-polish finish. The reflective, smooth surface takes on the color of its environment. Facetted downwards – similar to the mounting of a diamond – the frame holds the unfinished, rough slate slab. The slab is polished solely on its edges and on its underside. The weight of the materials emphasizes the particular radiance of the coffee table.

Available in Italian, dark black, or Brasilian slate. Due to its high iron content, the slab begins to corrode according to the lines of its fissures and, through this, allows fascinating color patterns to form. The natural stone surface is color-enhanced as well as surface-sealed. This provides optimal protection against dirt and liquids.
